Shivam Uniyal(Dehradun) Uttarakhand, which has long been a popular tourist destination for celebrities and nature lovers, is also gaining popularity as a filming location. Special Certificate 2018, Best Film Promotion Friendly State 2018, and Most Film Friendly State Award 2019 are just a few of the awards the state has received for fostering filmmaking.
Since the state government approved the first Film Policy in 2015, 400 films have been shot in Uttarakhand. Due to the covid-19 epidemic, the number of shooting projects in the state has increased from 18 in 2015, 37 in 2016, 50 in 2017, 80 in 2018, 142 in 2019, and just 50 in 2020.
However, 39 shooting projects (films, web series, music series, and documentaries) were shot for the first two months of 2021, including 16 feature films, 6 web series, 11 music series (including Garhwali music CDs), 4 documentaries, and a serial. In the state’s Garhwal and Kumaon regions, high-profile films like as Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar’s ‘Badhaii Do,’ Ronit Roy and Richa Chadha’s ‘Candy’ (web series), and Karan Razdan’s ‘Hindutva’ are being shot. Tehri, Haridwar, Almora, Pauri, and other regions of Garhwal and Kumaon have been signed for filming, but Dehradun and Nainital are the most popular venues.
Surprisingly, filmmakers are now taking an interest in
Uttarakhand culture and are producing films about the state’s history and culture. One such film is ‘Gadera’ (Stream), which will be aired on OTT channels and will depict Uttarakhand folklore. Another feature film, ‘Kedar-Pride of Pahad,’ is based on the life of Kedar Singh, a working-class bachelor and a small-time boxing freak from Uttarakhand’s hills, and tells the storey of a man who wants to build a hospital in his father’s loving memory, which reflects the needs of the state’s hilly areas. ‘Women and Child Education in Uttarakhand’ is a documentary, and feature films like ‘Pahadon Mein’ and ‘Kathgodam Last Stop’ are based on the issues and folklores of
Uttarakhand.
“For the film, we chose a large number of theatrical artists from
Uttarakhand as well as from other countries. Working in this state was one of my most memorable filmmaking experiences. Our team had no trouble obtaining clearances, and the locals were also pleasant “Gadera’s director, Yogesh Vats, stated. “I’d love to come back and shoot here again. In fact, I am happy to report that several of my film industry acquaintances have inquired about my Uttarakhand filming experience and have expressed an interest in shooting in this beautiful state in the near future “Added he “With an increase in the number of shooting projects in the state, local theatre artists, small business owners, and tourism all benefit, increasing the state’s revenue and people’s income. Regional languages were utilised in films like ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu,’ which disseminated the state’s culture. In fact, the novels Gadera and Badhai Do are set in Uttarakhand. Many films also use traditional clothes from the state.” Uttarakhand Film Development Council Nodal Officer K.S. Chauhan said “From time to time, the government hosts seminars and conclaves with film directors and other industry professionals to better understand their needs for filming convenience and to inform them about the best shooting locations in the state,” he added.
