Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has unveiled its latest creation, Grok, an AI bot that is set to make its way into the X social media platform. Grok will also be available as a standalone app and will be offered to all X Premium+ subscribers once it exits the beta stage, according to Elon Musk’s recent announcement.

Grok is poised to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was co-founded by Musk in 2015. Musk’s departure from the OpenAI board in 2018 due to conflicts of interest with Tesla paved the way for this rivalry. It’s worth noting that xAI collaborates with Musk’s other ventures, including Tesla.

In anticipation of Grok’s launch, Elon Musk proclaimed on the X platform, “In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists,” and even asserted that the current prototype surpasses ChatGPT 3.5 in various benchmarks.

Musk’s introduction of xAI in July was accompanied by the declaration that the startup was indeed in competition with OpenAI. Prior to xAI’s debut, Musk had teased the development of “TruthGPT,” described as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” intended to rival ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing AI. He outlined the idea of an AI that seeks to understand the universe as a path to AI safety.

According to xAI, Grok is “an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, designed to answer nearly any question and even suggest what questions to ask.” The AI boasts a touch of humor and a rebellious streak, making it a unique addition to the AI landscape. xAI claims that Grok possesses real-time knowledge via the 𝕏 platform and can tackle spicy questions that other AI systems might reject.

Grok is currently in its early beta stage, and xAI has promised users that the AI bot will continue to improve in the coming weeks with user feedback.
