Earthquake on Monday in Indonesia kills 46

Jakarta: At least 46 people were killed and about 300 injured in an earthquake that struck Indonesia on Monday. Dozens of buildings in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia were damaged in the earthquake. The earthquake is stated trop be of 5.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale.

According to the US Geographical Survey, the quake was centred in the Cianjur region of Java province at a depth of 10 kms.

Strong tremors were felt in Jakarta for about three minutes. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, and volcanoes because of its location. In February a magnitude of 6.2 earthquakes in West Sumatra killed at least 25 people and injured more 450 people. In January 2021 more than 100 people were killed in an earthquake of 6.2 magnitudes in West Sulawesi province. A powerful Indian Ocean quake and tsunami in 2004 killed about 230,000 people in several adjoining countries. A majority of them were from Indonesia.
