Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi demanded on Monday that BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma be arrested immediately for her controversial remarks directed at Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

After several Islamic countries summoned Indian envoys to lodge their protests over the controversy, Owaisi called the suspension of Sharma from the BJP a sham and launched an all-out attack on the Modi government’s foreign policy.

India has sunk in the eyes of the world. The foreign policy of the country was ruined. The esoteric has entered the mainstream. I demand (Nupur Sharma’s) arrest, not just suspension, said the Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP.

Owaisi claimed that leaders like Sharma have the backing of the party’s top brass and that the BJP sends its spokespeople to TV debates to make inflammatory statements.

As the row over their alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad escalated with protests from some Muslim countries, the BJP suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal on Sunday.
