4 women dead due to sterilisation in Telangana

Hyderabad: The state government has temporarily put a halt on the scheme of sterilisation at the government hospital at Ibrahimpatnam in Rangareddy district of Telangana, after four women died due to it.

After this decision of the government, the double puncture laparoscopy (DPL) technique of family planning has been temporarily stopped in all government hospitals of the state. In fact, 34 women aged 22 to 36 participated in the DPL camp for sterilization at the Community Health Center in Ibrahimpatnam. Four women died after the surgery.

Taking this whole episode seriously, the Health Department has temporarily banned the DPL technique. Resumption of DPL technology will be considered after receiving the report from the committee appointed to investigate the incident. DPL technique is a very short procedure of sterilization, people are discharged from the hospital a few hours after the surgery.

It is noteworthy that in this case the state government has suspended the medical superintendent of the hospital and the license of doctors involved in sterilization has been canceled for the time being. The government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh and 2BHK flats to the families of the four deceased women.
