Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dharmendra Yadav has triumphed in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, defeating his closest rival, Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua of the BJP, by a margin of 1,61,035 votes. Yadav garnered 5,08,239 votes, while Nirahua received 3,47,204 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate, Mohammad Sabeeha Ansari, secured 1,79,839 votes.
In the 2019 general elections, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav defeated Nirahua in Azamgarh by a significant margin of 2,59,874 votes. However, after Akhilesh Yadav won the Karhal assembly seat in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections, he resigned as an MP. In the subsequent bypoll, Dharmendra Yadav narrowly lost to Nirahua by a margin of 8,769 votes.
The Azamgarh seat has a varied political history, with BJP’s Ramakant Yadav winning it in 2009, and SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav securing the seat in 2014.
