New Delhi, December 8: In a significant development, the foundation stone for the upcoming terminal building at Rajahmundry Airport in Andhra Pradesh is scheduled to be laid on December 10. The momentous ceremony will be attended by Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, along with Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and other dignitaries, including Gen (Retd) V K Singh, Minister of State for Civil Aviation; Road Transport and Highways.
Rajahmundry, known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh,’ is poised for enhanced air travel connectivity due to its cultural heritage, trade significance, and tourist attractions. The expansion of the terminal building, necessitated by the city’s rapid growth in passenger traffic, will cover an additional area of 17,029 sqm, with a project cost of Rs 350 Crore.
The expanded Rajahmundry Airport Terminal Building will boast a total area of 21,094 sqm, catering to 2100 passengers during peak hours and accommodating 30 lakh passengers annually. Presently connected to Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, the airport handles 126 flight movements weekly.
The proposed expansion includes essential passenger facilities such as 28 check-in counters, four conveyor belts in the arrival section, eight X-Bis machines, three aerobridges, and a variety of F&B and Retail outlets. Additionally, facilities for Divyangjans have been incorporated, aligning with Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan norms. The city-side area of the airport will also witness an upgrade to accommodate approximately 600 cars for parking.
Designed with a focus on energy efficiency, the new terminal building aims to maximize natural light flow. With Rajahmundry’s rich heritage and cultural offerings, coupled with the state-of-the-art terminal, the city is poised to become a sought-after destination for tourists seeking an authentic Indian experience.
